The goal is to prevent further destruction of the Amazon rainforest by committing to stop deforestation on 145 million hectares of unallocated public land.
Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos have taken part in efforts to protect important areas of the Amazon rainforest. This happened as part of the Protect Our Planet project. So, they donated $200 million to an important cause. Variety reported it.
Two nonprofits – DiCaprio’s Re:Wild Conservation and Bezos’ Nature Solutions – are contributing $200 million to the POP Challenge to support the expansion and management of Brazil’s protected areas and indigenous territories.
The funds will be used over the next four years to help Brazil achieve zero deforestation in the Amazon and accelerate the South American country’s transition to a sustainable and green economy.
“We are inspired by Brazil’s ambitious goals to protect the Amazon, one of the most important wildlife destinations on the planet, and we are excited to support these efforts through the Protect Our Planet project,” said DiCaprio.
The Managing Director and Governor of the Bezos Land Foundation, Christian Samper, also emphasized the crucial importance of the Amazon to the ecosystem.
“The Amazon is critical to the future of global biodiversity and climate, and we applaud the commitment of President Lula and the Brazilian government to protect it,” he said.
By the way, this program is the largest private funding of biodiversity conservation in history.
