Turkey will not back down from its position until all its demands are met, the politician said.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to continue to block Sweden’s application to join NATO until the demands are met. This was reported by CNN.
The Turkish leader told reporters that the country will not back down from its stance against Sweden’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance until all its demands are met.
“We don’t want them to shelter the separatist organizations and the villains from FETÖ. And I want everyone to know that we will not back down until all these demands are met,” Erdogan insisted.
FETÖ in Turkey is the name given to the followers of the religious leader Fethullah Gülen, who has been in exile in the US state of Pennsylvania since 1999. Erdogan accused him of organizing a coup attempt in July 2016.
Sweden’s membership has not yet been ratified by only two countries – Hungary and Türkiye. According to unofficial information, Ankara is demanding that Sweden extradite or deport suspected Kurdish separatists for the July NATO summit in Vilnius.
It will be recalled that in January of this year, a scandal broke out between Turkey and Sweden due to the burning of the Koran at the Turkish embassy in Stockholm. Erdogan said that after this and other anti-Turkish actions, Sweden should not expect Ankara to support its application to join NATO.
As a result, Finland joined the alliance on its own.
