3 tips to make a scar less visible

Some care can contribute to good healing of the skin after a surgical procedure

After surgery, a natural mechanism works in the body to close the cut. To restore the skin from the first layer, the body increases circulation in the region so that the cells responsible for healing, the fibroblasts, can achieve what everyone wants: the most harmonic way possible.

But is there a way to guarantee a discreet and skin-colored line? “Healing is a box of surprises. The result depends from the technique used and the surgeon’s whim to the care in the postoperative period and the genetics of each person”, says plastic surgeon Matheus Manica, a member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery.

It is even common for the same person to experience different healing processes over the years. Depending on the type of procedure, body part, and even age, healing can vary. Therefore, it is important to take some care so that it occurs in the best way.

1. relaxed body

Some care after the procedure is important for the healing process of the skin. “Avoid efforts. Do not force the stitches. For this, rest is fundamental”, says Manica. Right after the surgery, the ideal is not to gain weight and avoid the region end up stretching the skin and forcing the stitches.

two. cleaning and dressing

Protecting the region with a bandage helps to maintain the clean wound and away from bacteria and other infectious agents. “You shouldn’t move or pull the scab from the wound. In addition to delaying healing, this increases the risk of infection,” says the surgeon.

3. Healthy habits

Having a balanced and healthy diet, rich in vitamins and minerals, in addition to adequate water intake to maintain body hydration, help to optimize healing. Avoiding cigarettes and alcohol is essential. “Smoking and alcohol consumption increase free radicals and inflammation in the body, which delays the healing process”, says the doctor.

Treatments after healing

If healing does not occur in the best way, even following the medical guidelines and postoperative care, additional treatments may be required. This ranges from the use of acids and laser application to the scar to the use of injectable medications, such as corticoids, especially in cases of keloids, or even the use of botox in the scar.

Each organism responds in a different way. There is no medicine or treatment that works for everyone. “The ideal is to consult your doctor to indicate the best treatment for you”, concludes Matheus Manica.
