Researchers advise not to forget that holidays are not only a feast for the stomach, but also an opportunity to share food with friends and loved ones.

Researchers say that New Year and Christmas festivities are necessary for a person and are not as dangerous as previously thought. In particular, it is noted that you should not be afraid to gain a few extra pounds, writes Science Alert.

Emma Beckett, an expert in food science and human nutrition at Newcastle University, says that the average is about plus 0.7 kg, which is not as much as it seems.

“The science of nutrition is very complex, especially because people are complex and diverse. Some studies suggest that despite a significant increase in overall energy intake and a decrease in diet quality, weight gain is not happening. Most of this research takes place in the northern hemisphere, where the main holidays fall in winter. These studies are more focused on weight than on people’s health. However, it’s important to remember that weight is just a marker that’s easy to measure, but health is something quite different,” he said.

According to the expert, food is part of our culture, traditions and holidays, which contributes to our social, cultural and emotional well-being.

“This role of food in our lives is difficult to study, but it is important to understand that it is what connects us to our loved ones, traditions. And eating together helps our emotional well-being and happiness,” added Beckett.

The specialist also shared some rules:

“Drink in moderation. It’s important to remember that drinking too much alcohol can lead to an increased risk of developing chronic diseases. Drink water. Alternating alcoholic drinks with water can help reduce amount of alcohol you drink and will also ease hangovers, but won’t completely eliminate the risks. Beware of food poisoning. Despite the fun, remember basic food safety rules, wash your hands and -store food properly Don’t forget about allergies It’s important to make sure your guests don’t have any food allergies.

As a reminder, in 2022, due to martial law, which will last until February 19, 2023, all additional holidays starting March 8, 2022 have been canceled.
