“POC POC”
The “Poc Awards” has its name inspired by a slang from the LGBTQIA+ community that has been re-signified over the years. “In the early 2000s, the term ‘poc’ was used pejoratively to refer to the most effeminate gay men. ‘Poc poc’ was an onomatopoeia of the noise of walking in high heels”, says Vinícius Yamada, editor-in-chief of Gay Blog BR. “However, over time, the term has taken on a new meaning and currently does not have the offensive connotation it once did. Today, the term ‘poc’ is a symbol of empowerment and a caring and humorous way for gay people to call each other “, he explains.
Both the Poc Awards trophies and the Gay Blog BR portal have a subscription to the SCRUFF app, which has been present in Brazil since 2018 and connects over 15 million gay, bisexual and transgender people in more than 180 countries across 6 continents. Founded in 2010 by Johnny Skandros and Eric Silverberg, now its CEO, the SCRUFF app is available for free on iOS and Android devices.
