A 2 kg dumbbell was found in the anus of a 54-year-old man, who had to undergo a surgical procedure
The city of Manaus, in Amazonas, registered an unusual situation: a 2 kg dumbbell, gym weight, was found by doctors in the body of a 54-year-old man. The 20 cm object was located in the patient’s anusand the condition was even published in the scientific journal International Journal of Surgery Case Reports as a case study.
Cramping, difficulty having a bowel movement for two days, nausea and vomiting: it was with these complaints that the man, unnamed, arrived at the hospital. Despite the normalization of his vital signs, the patient’s abdomen was swollen., prompting doctors to refer the man for an X-ray. It was with this exam that the team noticed the presence “from a dumbbell-shaped foreign body of exercise”.
REMOVAL OF THE DUMBLER FROM THE PATIENT’S ANUS
After checking the dumbbell on the patient, the medical team was ready to remove the object. Without signs of perforation, the doctors would assess that it would not be possible to perform the procedure with grasping instruments – tweezers used in surgeries to hold visceral organs. “Anesthesia was performed, with partial visualization of the foreign body, but without the possibility of extracting the object with grasping instruments”the scientists reported in the study.
With this analysis, the gym weight had to be removed manually. Despite not using instruments, the surgery was successful, “no active bleeding, mucosal lesions or other complications”.
HOW DID THE CASE OCCUR?
But the question that may remain is how the case happened. The patient did not give details about how it happened, but the researchers highlighted a fact that similar pictures predominate among “white men between 20 and 40 years”on account of “practices of sexual gratification as the greatest motivation”. Still, doctors emphasize the importance of seeking help in situations like these. “Usually, most patients, out of embarrassment, only present for medical attention after several unsuccessful attempts to retrieve the object alone, resulting in a calculated average delay of 1.4 days to seek help.”.
After the procedure, the patient was hospitalized for three days and was referred to the general surgery ward. During this period, no complications were observed and the man was then discharged from the hospital.
