Kim Kardashian wasn’t surprised to be criticized for wearing the iconic Marilyn Monroe dress to the 2022 Met Gala.
On the latest episode of “The Kardashians,” the Skims founder described feeling “nervous” about her plan to wear the dress.
“I’m a little nervous that some people are going to hate her and just be like, ‘How dare you think you can wear Marilyn’s dress,'” Kardashian said during Thursday’s episode of the show. – And I understand him.
At the fashion event, the TV star appeared in Monroe’s iconic outfit, the exact same one worn by the Hollywood icon in 1962 when she sang a legendary rendition of “Happy Birthday” to then-President John F. Kennedy for his 45th a birthday .
Kardashian’s bold move marked only the second time in history that the famous coat has been tried on, according to Instagram post from Ripley’s museum, which housed the dress.
The reality star worked with the museum to preserve the pop culture piece, carefully transporting it with gloves and making sure she only wore the dress for a limited amount of time on the red carpet.
In the latest episode of “The Kardashians,” she described the laborious process of getting clearance for the fashion moment.
In one clip, while examining a replica of the dress, Kardashian admitted she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to fit the historic garment on her body.
“If it doesn’t fit, I can’t even try on the original,” she told her stylist, Danielle Levi.
Even when it came to dressing up the reruns, he explained, “Nobody trusted us; for years they never sent samples”.
“Then once I came to Paris and tried on the samples, they were like, ‘Oh wait, it really matches our stuff.’ So I don’t know how to convince the guy who owns Marilyn’s original dress that I’m a shapeshifter,” she added.
Kardashian she lost 16 pounds in three weeks to fit into the clothes because they didn’t close completely over her frame.
“I would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out sugar and carbs and eat only the cleanest vegetables and protein,” he said. Vogue said on the red carpet. “I didn’t starve, but I was so strict.”
Despite diet and exercise, the dress fit only partially, forcing her to tie a vintage white fur coat that exposed the zipper.
After the initial red carpet unveiling, Kardashian changed into a replica dress to protect the original.

Even with Kardashian’s extra measures to preserve the blonde bombshell’s outfit and legacy, many denounced her decision, including Bob Mackie, the costume designer who designed Monroe’s iconic dress months before her death.
“[Marilyn] she was a goddess. A crazy goddess, but a goddess. It was simply fabulous. No one takes pictures like this. And it was made for her. It was designed for you,” she said Weekly entertainment in May of the dress. “No one else should be seen in that dress.”
Fully expecting this backlash, Kardashian recently clarified her reasons for borrowing the sexy coat.
“I love the fact that Marilyn was a normal girl who took it and became the most famous woman in the entire world,” she said of the late actor’s legacy. “It’s just fascinating.”
“He looked like someone we know,” a producer later said off-screen, to which Kardashian coyly replied, “Who?”
