Tom Brady’s remarkable football career took the New England Patriots to nine Super Bowls. Although the quarterback said on his podcast this week that he’s not nervous on the field, Brady needed some courage before hosting “Saturday Night Live.”
Brady recalled Monday on “Let’s Go!” from SiriusXM that “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels turned down countless sketches he tried out for — moments before he took the stage in 2005.
“He’d eat his popcorn or whatever the hell he was eating and he’d say, ‘No, scratch,’ and ‘Not this and not that,'” Brady said. “And I’m sitting there and I’m like, ‘Dude, let’s move on in 10 minutes!'”
While the football star said Michaels was “so ready” and promised he would “be on his way,” Brady recalled muttering worriedly, “I need tequila. I have to go down. I need to change. I need two shots of tequila before I go any further. Like, let’s get this thing moving, you know?”
Brady, whose emergence came after the Patriots had won three of the previous four Super Bowls, continued to thrive. With rock star Beck as the musical guest, at the start of “SNL” he joked that he was more than just a football player and continued to sing his monologue.
“When you’re in the moment … you’re not nervous because you know what’s coming,” Brady said Monday. “As long as you prepare and are ready to go, you know what to expect and second nature takes over. And then you just make it happen.”
Brady added that the pressure of performing live on television was similar to the final minutes of a football game, when victory is not certain. He said he has “no guts” to play the sport and likes it when others say, “That’s the guy I want out there with me” during a championship game.
Brady also praised Michaels and the SNL cast — which at the time included Seth Meyers, Will Forte, Rachel Dratch and Tina Fey — for being “so relaxed” and said it was “amazing” how became the series.
Brady and model Gisele Bündchen, who was reportedly uncomfortable with her return to football after a brief retirement, divorced in October after 13 years of marriage. Now a Tampa Bay Buccaneer, Brady led his team to victory Monday, telling the media, “It was pretty damn great.”
