Unlike the original animation, released in 2002, the end of live-action shows Nani (Sydney Agudong) Leaving Lilo (Maia Kealha) Under the care of a neighboring family to move to the United States, where he resumes his studies at the university. In the animated version, the two remain together, forming a new family alongside Cobra Bubbles and the aliens who accompany Stitch, played by co-director and screenwriter for the original animation, Chris Sanders.
After the repercussion, the director spoke through his X -account account (former Twitter), citing an interview with Deadline to justify the decision. According to him, the change is linked to the proposal to modernize and bring more nuances to history, saying that “it simply seemed the right thing to do.”
Camp He explained that since the beginning of development, he discussed with the team about how it would be important to complicate Ohana’s idea within a closer and closer reality. For him, Nani was always portrayed in the animation with “too pink”, which did not match her situation so much.
“She was very intelligent and had to leave many of these dreams or add them because she needed to take care of her little sister and inherited all this responsibility when she was so young,” he said.
He also pointed out that, in real life, accepting the idea that “no one is left behind” would not be as simple for someone overwhelmed as the character: “I would certainly think, ‘Well, I have difficulties here,” he said. Therefore, this reflection directly influenced the construction of the relationship between the sisters and the choice of the new outcome of the story.
