Internet users accuse the PLAVE group of plagiarizing SEVENTEEN; understand!

New teaser for the album by the virtual group PLAVE generated controversy when it was compared to the concept of SEVENTEEN, dividing internet users; understand!

The release of the teaser for ‘Caligo Pt. 1’, the third mini-album by the group PLAVE, has generated intense debate among fans on social media. The image, which displays a dark and mysterious aesthetic, drew attention due to its similarity to the concept of a SEVENTEEN teaser, more specifically the JEONGHAN X WONWOO unit project.

The comparison, which quickly took over social media, divided fans’ opinions on whether the similarity between the concepts is legitimate or constitutes possible plagiarism.

Some internet users pointed out the similarity between the visual elements, such as the art direction, the choice of colors and even the hairstyles of the members of PLAVE and SEVENTEEN, generating a wave of criticism. Many were uncomfortable with the idea that the group could have been inspired by SEVENTEEN’s concept, questioning the originality of the promotional material.

However, other fans argued that the concepts used, such as the “wanted” and “mysterious” look, are frequently used in K-pop and are difficult to consider as exclusive to a single group. “The concept of ‘you saw’ is something that has been used by several artists before. This is not something exclusive to any group”, commented a fan in defense of the virtual group.

Additionally, some have raised the issue that SEVENTEEN themselves have also drawn inspiration from similar concepts from other groups in the past, such as SHINee, suggesting that comparisons made by fans may be exaggerated.

PLAVE is a virtual group formed by five members under VLAST, which consist of Yejun, Noah, Bamby, Eunha and Hamin. The group made their official debut on March 12, 2023 with the single album ‘Asterum’. Unlike many K-pop groups, PLAVE is not made up of AI-generated members, but rather real artists whose movements and expressions are captured using motion capture technology. This feature allows the group’s performances to be immersive and highly detailed, with each movement being tracked to reflect the individuality of the members.
