During the consideration of the issue of a vote of no confidence in Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, the opposition left the meeting, and Fico himself announced the preparation of a “Maidan”.
Slovak opposition parties walked out of the parliament hall where the meeting was taking place in protest because Robert Fico had closed it – he decided to read to the deputies the “secret report” of the Slovak Information Service. The opposition believes that Fico wanted to disrupt the discussion of the vote of no confidence in him.
The prime minister subsequently wrote that he had received information from the special services that the opposition was preparing a “Maidan” in the country – a blockade of roads and government buildings, sabotage of the government, and the organization of some kind of nationwide strike.
Slovak opposition parties united to force Fico to resign. They believe that he has given up governing the country and is bowing to the dictators.
For the first time since the 2023 parliamentary elections, the opposition in Slovakia is so united. There are four leading parties in the countries.
There are many differences between us, but when it comes to defending democracy and freedom in Slovakia, we know how to work together,” said the leader of Progressive Slovakia, Šimečko.
More than 70 opposition deputies agreed on a joint statement in which they demand respect for Slovakia’s membership in the EU and NATO and condemnation of Russian aggression in Ukraine. Fico’s recent visit to Moscow is not the only reason for the vote of no confidence, because Fico’s foreign trips and public statements generally distort Slovakia’s foreign policy, the opposition explained. To dismiss the government, 76 votes in parliament are needed. They are still being searched for.
