Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of CS Lewis’ classic ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ will be released exclusively in theaters before arriving on Netflix
Netflix broke one of its traditions by deciding that the adaptation of ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’, directed by Greta Gerwig, will have an exclusive release in theaters before debuting on streaming. According to the American press (via Omelete), the first film should hit the big screen on Thanksgiving 2026, on November 26th, and will only be available on the platform at Christmas, on December 25th.
In addition, the streaming giant plans a broad marketing campaign to promote the film in theaters, in partnership with IMAX, ensuring prominence in giant screen theaters. According to Ted Sarandos, CEO of Netflix, the project represents a bolder approach to the platform’s productions.
The film, which will be based on ‘The Magician’s Nephew’, will begin filming in July 2025, in the summer of the United States, with a production period of more than seven months. This schedule suggests that two films will be recorded simultaneously, with the second possibly being an adaptation of ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’.
Gerwigknown for her work on ‘Barbie’ and ‘Little Women’, will have the mission of bringing a new vision to the universe created by CS Lewis. The story of ‘The Magician’s Nephew’ explores the origins of Narnia, following Gregory and Polly in their discovery of a magical forest that connects different worlds.
Details about the cast have not yet been released, but it is known that Louis Partridgestar of ‘Enola Homes’, is already confirmed in the project. Her role remains a secret, but was cast by herself. Greta Gerwig.
This change in Netflix’s distribution strategy reflects the platform’s effort to win over the audience of large film franchises, expanding its presence in the large-scale exhibition market.
