In T-ARA member, Lee Areum, is sentenced to prison by Korean justice after accusations against her ex-husband; Understand the case!
Lee Areuma former member of the group T-ARA, was sentenced by the Suwon District Court to eight months in prison, with two years of probation, in addition to 40 hours of child abuse prevention classes. The sentence, handed down on January 16, resulted from accusations of emotional abuse against a child and defamation of an individual during a live broadcast.
The court also sentenced his mother to four months in prison, with one year of probation, for negligence in allowing her grandchildren to be exposed to the abusive environment. Both are prohibited from having contact with children.
Areum had accused her ex-husband, Kim Young Gulof physically abusing his children, alleging that he subjected them to inhumane treatment, such as spitting, urinating and smearing their faces with feces. However, after investigations, the police found no evidence to support these allegations.
According to the Korean press, the children were pressured by the former idol and her mother to provide false statements. During the trial, the court stated:
“She admitted to all charges and inflicted serious emotional harm on the legal guardians of the victimized children, which deserves significant sentencing.”
Regarding defamation, the court highlighted that the former singer stated that a court decision involving a third party had been manipulated without verifying the facts:
“It was judged that there was an intentional act in making such statements.”
Pregnant with her third child, Areum will face the consequences of his actions on probation. Fans, who initially supported the singer during the accusations against her ex-husband, expressed outrage after her culpability was revealed.
The case exposed not only the former artist’s false allegations, but also the devastating impact of her actions on her children and those involved.
Areum debuted with T-ara in 2012, as well as being part of the subunit T-ara N4, debuted in April 2013. In July of the same year, the former K-pop artist left both formations.
