Created by Naoto Oshima In the 90s, during a competition between SEGA game designers, Sonic came up with the name Mr. Needlemouse, and had his first game developed by Yuji Nakatitled “Sonic the Hedgehog”, which hit shelves on June 23, 1991. The title, however, was not chosen randomly, as it is directly linked to the animal that inspired Sonic’s look.
What animal is Sonic in real life?
In real life, according to G1, Sonic is a headgehog, popularly known as the African pygmy hedgehog, one of the most common species to be acquired as pets.
Unlike games and films, the headgehog is not blue, and can be found with different color variations, generally focused on neutral tones, such as beige and brown. Its famous thorns that cover its body, however frightening they may be, are harmless, being similar to thicker, hardened hair.
Despite this, it is necessary to remember to be careful in the first interactions with this mammal, since, in the first contacts with humans, it tends to be a little skittish, and to often stay in the shape of a ball — an attitude carried out by the species as a form of to protect themselves when they feel threatened. However, if you hear them purring, with a noise similar to that of cats, it is a sign that they are well and comfortable.
It is also important to note that it may take a few months for the animal to gain confidence in its new home, and you need to respect the animal’s time. Furthermore, naturally, the headgehog is a calm species that prefers to be alone, making it not a recommended pet for those looking to have a lot of interaction with the animal.
