Starting today, January 15, the German Ministry of Defense will stop publishing messages on the social network X (formerly Twitter), owned by American businessman Elon Musk.
The press service of the department reported this.
The Department of Defense is suspending the BMVgFederal Ministry of Defense channel on Platform X effective January 15, 2025, and will no longer be proactively posting to the channel for the foreseeable future, the statement said.
In the future, official channels and the central channel of the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) will also be suspended.
The ministry notes that they resorted to this step primarily because on this platform “an objective exchange of arguments is becoming increasingly difficult.”
In the future, the German Ministry of Defense plans to use the WhatsApp channel as an alternative, for example to provide information about important dates and decisions taken by the minister, as well as ministry news.
One thing is clear: one channel on social networks cannot satisfy all the communication needs of the ministry,” the department notes. “Therefore, in the future, various forms and channels will continue to be used to ensure transparent and broad communication within the department.
The ministry notes that “in exceptional cases” they can publish messages in X – for example, in the case of disinformation campaigns.
