‘Round 6’ director Hwang Dong Hyeok revealed that former BIGBANG member TOP was not his first choice for the role of Thanos
Since the premiere of the second season of “Round 6”, the character Thanos, played by singer and actor Choi Seung-hyun, the TOPformer member of BIGBANG, has been one of the most popular names on social media among the global public.
In the plot, Choi Su Bong, known as Thanos, is a retired rapper who became famous on a rap competition show, but who lost all his money after making a failed investment in cryptocurrencies following the wrong advice from influencer Myung-gi (Im Si-wan), who is also participating in the games.
Despite the great repercussion of TOP like Thanos, the star was almost not cast in the role, as revealed by the director Hwang Dong Hyeokin a recent interview with the South Korean portal Insight. During the conversation, the filmmaker reveals that the character was not written with the singer in mind, and that his initial idea was to offer the role to another rapper: Swings.
“The character of Choi Su Bong, who appears as Thanos, was not created to cast Choi Seung Hyun. I wanted to show the problems young people face, like Bitcoin and drugs. I even thought about giving the role to someone like the rapper Swings, but I felt like I would have a hard time trusting his acting skills.”
Second Dong Hyeokone of his biggest difficulties when casting the perfect actor to play Thanos was finding someone who could interpret all of the rapper’s eccentricity in a realistic way, and who TOP was on his list, but he was afraid that he would deny the proposal, as the character “makes fun” of facts that are similar to the star.
The director said: “Choi Seung Hyun was on the list, but I wondered if he would accept a role that was literally making fun of him. I later got a response saying he would try, and I saw his potential in the audition, which made him the best fit for the role.”
