An anonymous AFP source at the French General Staff confirmed that during training in France, “several dozen” people deserted from the 155th mechanized brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces named after Anna of Kyiv, which is being formed.
There have been a few desertions, but they remain very marginal compared to the volume of trained personnel, the agency quotes its interlocutor.
He also noted that desertion is not a criminal offense in France, so the French prosecutor could not arrest a Ukrainian serviceman who left his unit without permission.
France pledged to train and equip half of the brigade, named after Anna Yaroslavna, daughter of Grand Duke Yaroslav the Wise and the squad of King Henry I, who ruled France (mainly the central part of modern France) in the 11th century.
In recent months, Ukrainian media and lawmakers have reported hundreds of desertions from the brigade and said it has effectively disbanded.
