New information about the circumstances surrounding the death of Liam Payne, former member of One Direction, is shared by the judge in the case
Investigations into the death of Liam Payneformer member of the band One Direction, continue to unfold, with new details being revealed this weekend. The 31-year-old British singer was found dead on October 17, 2024, after falling from the third-floor balcony of the Hotel CasaSur, in Palermo, Buenos Aires. The new update on the case, shared by the judge Laura Bruniard on December 28, it brought significant changes to the narrative about the circumstances of the crash and the responsibilities involved.
According to the judge, Payne he did not lose his balance, as initially claimed. Instead, the investigation revealed that the singer, in a state of extreme intoxication, was trying to leave the room via the balcony. The new version of the incident contradicts the previous hypothesis, that the artist had fainted and fallen.
“I assert that [Payne] he tried to leave the balcony where he was left, because forensic experts found that he did not lose his balance. That’s how the fall occurred,” Bruniard reported.
More about the investigations
Local police officers pointed out that the singer was under the influence of a combination of cocaine and alcohol at the time of his death, evidence confirmed by forensic analysis. Based on this information, five people were accused of involvement in the case, including Payne, Roger Noreswho now faces manslaughter charges, as well as hotel employees such as the manager Gilda Martin and the reception manager Esteban Grassi.
As reported by Rolling Stone Brasil, the judge did not believe that Nores, Martin and Grassi had planned or desired the singer’s death, but concluded that they acted recklessly.
“They didn’t plan the result, but they created a legally disapproved risk,” he said. Bruniard.
Nores, who initially faced more serious charges, now has his charges reduced and could be convicted of manslaughter. He was the main point of contact for Liam at the hotel and took responsibility for the singer’s safety during his stay.
The manslaughter charges against Martin and Grassi emerged following evidence that the former One Direction member was in a vulnerable state the day before his death. Hotel footage shows Payne being “dragged” to the room on October 16, which, according to the judge, clearly indicated the singer’s state of intoxication. “The right thing to do was to leave him in a safe place and with company, until the doctor arrived,” he wrote, highlighting the recklessness of the employees in not taking adequate measures to guarantee the artist’s safety.
In addition, two other people were accused of involvement in the case for selling drugs to Payne: Ezequiel Pereyra and Brian Paiz, who face drug trafficking charges and were sentenced to pre-trial detention. According to the judge, the singer had paid US$100 (R$618.40, at current prices) to Pereyra for a quantity of cocaine and subsequently sent a car to collect more drugs from him. As for Paizalthough he claimed that he used drugs with Payne without receiving payment, evidence indicates that the singer was looking for more substances while the accused was in the room.
With the new accusations and the details revealed by the judge, the judicial process continues, and the people involved continue to be investigated.
