After numerous speculations from fans about a possible relationship between Elphaba and Glinda, the original author of ‘Wicked’ spoke out on the matter
Since its release, “Wicked” has become a huge worldwide success. The film, which is an adaptation of the renowned Broadway musical inspired by the author’s book of the same name Gregory Maguirepresents the story of the unlikely friendship between Elphaba and Glinda, characters played by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Granderespectively.
In the plot, the protagonists start as rivals, however, they end up getting closer after being placed as roommates at Shiz University. For this reason, many fans ended up speculating and rooting for a possible relationship between the witches, even with the love triangle in which the duo is involved during the plot.
This is because, right at the beginning of the story, Glinda falls in love with Fiyero, with whom she begins a relationship, however, the prince has feelings for Elphaba, who also has a passion for the man, but hides what she feels so as not to affect her friendship with her. Good Witch — something that changes throughout the plot.
Could Glinda and Elphaba be in a relationship?
In a recent interview with the Gay Times portal, Cynthia and Ariana commented on speculation related to a possible relationship between their characters, saying they believe that, in fact, the two love each other, and have a “deep connection”.
“Elphie goes where the wind goes. I think she loves Glinda. I think she loves love. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with celebrating the deep connection you both have. They have a real relationship. It’s true love, which is probably why people are sending this, you know? Because what they build between themselves is an unbreakable bond and love.”, said Erivo.
Already Big stated that the protagonists have “such a safe space for each other, which is what all relationships should be, whether romantic or platonic. Glinda might be a little in the closet. You never know. Give it a little more time. I mean, it’s just true love, and I think it transcends sexuality. It’s just a kind of deep security. And that’s why [os fãs] probably ship. Every day in the Emerald City is a Pride parade, right? Even the chickens… those chickens are gay.”
What did the original author of ‘Wicked’ say?
Now, after speculation from fans and actresses, the author of the original book himself, Gregory Maguirespoke out on the matter. In an interview with the website Them (via Omelete), the writer explained that this tension between the two was always intentional, but that he left the interpretation free to the public.
“That was intentional, and it was modest and restrained and refined in such a way that you could imagine that one of those two young women felt more than the other and didn’t mean it,” Gregory reported.
Although, both on the big screen and on the Broadway stage, the feelings that the protagonists may have for each other are left implied, in the book the situation is a little different, as we can find a scene in which Elphaba and Glinda, from In fact, they kiss.
“Wicked” continues to be shown in cinemas worldwide. The second part, titled “Wicked: For Good”, is scheduled to premiere on November 20, 2025.
