What are all the books in the saga?

Discover all seven books that are responsible for making up the complete ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ franchise

Last week, fans of the literary franchise “The Chronicles of Narnia” received great news: according to information released by the portal Deadline, the new series inspired by the books of CS Lewisproduced by Netflix and directed by Greta Gerwig (Barbie), should start recording in July 2025.

The new adaptation, announced in 2019, has been highly anticipated by fans. This is because, although there is still no confirmation, rumors suggest that the series will adapt some of the books that were not covered in the film adaptations made by Disney in the 2000s.

However, for those who only knew the three film adaptations, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (2005), “Prince Caspian” (2008) and “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” (2010), the information that the complete saga, in fact, has seven works, may have come as a surprise.

Inspired by the Bible, the “Chronicles of Narnia” books were all released in the 1950s, including “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (1950), “Prince Caspian” (1951), “The Journey The Dawn Treader” (1952), “The Silver Chair” (1953), “The Horse and His Boy” (1954), “The Magician’s Nephew” (1955) and “The Last Battle” (1956).

However, it is important to highlight that the order in which the books are released does not coincide with the chronological order of the story. If you want to follow the works in the correct order, you need to read them as follows: “The Magician’s Nephew” (1955), “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (1950), “The Horse and His Boy” (1954), “Prince Caspian” (1951), “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” (1952), “The Silver Chair” (1953) and “The Last Battle” (1956).

But why didn’t Disney adapt the other books?

As found by the TecMundo portal, the main reason why Disney decided not to adapt the other four books would be the low box office of “Prince Caspian” (2008) and “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” (2010), compared to “The Lion , the Witch and the Wardrobe” (2005).

Information released by G1 indicates that, in 2005, the first film in the franchise grossed around US$745 million, being the third biggest of the year. In 2008, “Prince Caspian” sold just US$420 million, while “Dawn Treader” grossed US$415 million in 2010.

Furthermore, TecMundo also points out that another determining factor for Disney and 20th Fox Century not to adapt the other works would be the contents of the books, considered “too dense” for cinema, increasing the risk that they would not be very well received by the public.
