Among the oldest customs of these people is tattooing! With its origins coming from the Polynesian term “tatau”, which refers to the act of hurting the skin with a bone to leave a mark, the tattoo was used to identify the origin and other aspects of the lives of Polynesians, since, in ancient times, they They did not know writing, as Folha de S. Thus, Maui’s tattoos serve the same function, as they reveal important moments in the demigod’s life, such as the one that portrays him as a baby, as this recalls his origin, as the character was abandoned by his parents in the ocean, but his life was saved by the gods, who transformed him into an immortal being and owner of a magical hook that allows him to change shape.

Other striking tattoos of Maui depict some of his deeds as a demigod, such as the sun symbol, which represents the time he lassoed the central star of the Solar System closer to Earth in order to increase the length of the day; or the island, which brings back memories of when he pulled islands from the depths of the ocean, helping to create the life that humanity knows.

There is also the Mini Maui, a small-sized demigod tattoo that can move across Maui’s skin, which represents his conscience, helping him make more altruistic decisions.

The protagonist gets a symbol on her arm, which helps tell her story in the plot, when she is saved by deities from the sacrifice she makes to try to break the curse of Motufetu, an island cursed by Nalo, the god of storms, who prevents the tribes from connect.

More than memories, the appearance of the tattoo could mean that Moana, like Maui, acquired the status of a demigod in the new film, since, like him, she was saved by the gods when she was on the verge of death. The information, however, has not yet been confirmed by the studio.
