Meeting Oswald Cobblepot, the Penguin

Introduced in the pages of Detective Comics #58, released in 1941, Penguin was created by Bob Kane and Bill Fingerthe same creators of Batman. Presented as a thief who used his genius for petty crimes at first, as the issues went by, he expanded his criminal skills as he understood more about how Gotham works, becoming a true crime tycoon.

In the more than eighty years of creation, Penguin has gained some origin stories, but certain plots ended up being repeated, one of them being the one that states that Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot was a strange-looking boy, whose nose resembled a bird’s beak and had an awkward walk, characteristics that made him suffer bullying in childhood.

Coincidence or not, his mother had a bird shop, and this contact with birds made him have a great interest in winged animals, leading him to study ornithology – knowledge that would be advantageous to him when he joined the villainy, since two of his skills used whenever necessary are the control and command of birds.

After the death of the woman who gave birth to him, Oswald had to sell the family business to pay some debts and, without any prospect of a better life, he turned to crime, causing him, some time later, to adopt the codename that is so connected to his knowledge and unique appearance: Penguin.

Fueled by pathological rage and gifted with a great capacity for manipulation, Penguin also stands out for having a valuable power: information! This is because, knowing everything that happens in Gotham’s underworld, he can use his knowledge to blackmail, intimidate and corrupt anyone he can and thus get where he wants, this being one of the talents that allowed him to build his untouchable illegal empire.

Still, when Penguin encounters someone who makes things difficult, he has a quick solution, since he is surrounded by violent henchmen. More than that, when necessary, he doesn’t let his elegant clothes used to compensate for his unpleasant appearance stop him from risking getting his hands dirty with blood, as he uses several ingenious devices, such as weapons disguised as umbrellas, to end the problem.

It is worth remembering that Oswald’s journey to become the criminal feared by good and bad citizens of Gotham is long and full of setbacks that must be addressed in “Penguin” in the eight episodes that will be released weekly, every Sunday, at 10 pm, on Max until November 10, the date that marks the final chapter of the season.
