Damian Kotsur’s Polish film Under the Volcano, which follows a Ukrainian family at the beginning of a mass invasion, will be the country’s entry for the 2025 Oscars.
Poland has chosen the film Under the Volcano, directed by Damian Kotsur, as its candidate for the 2025 Oscars, Deadline reports.
The film tells the story of a Ukrainian family who found themselves in Tenerife during the beginning of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Starring Ukrainian actors Roman Lutsky, Anastasia Karpenko, Sofia Berezovskaya and Fyodor Pugachev.
The world premiere of the drama took place at the Toronto Film Festival. Damian Kotsur and Marta Konazhevskaya worked on the script, and Nikita Kuzmenko, known for the films Pamfir and Zhivaya Vatra, was the cameraman.
The film shows how the Ukrainian Kovalenko family, while on vacation in Tenerife, learns about the war, and their lives have changed significantly. From the perspective of 16-year-old Sophia, viewers experience shock, uncertainty and loss that intensify family conflicts. As noted by the Polish Oscar committee, the film “fills in the most difficult themes of our time – war and migration – leaving the feeling that anyone could find themselves under an awakened volcano. “
Next week, Under the Volcano will open the 49th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.
