Discover how the relationship between Maleficent and Aurora’s parents may have been established in ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and how this may have generated the curse
Based on the short story of the same name by Charles Perrault“Sleeping Beauty” was released in 1959 by Disney featuring Aurora, a princess cursed by the evil fairy, Maleficent, to fall into a deep sleep when she turned 16, as a form of revenge for the villain, who was the only one in the entire kingdom not to be invited to the christening party of the daughter of King Stefan and Queen Leah.
Although this is the reason presented in the film, a theory created by fans on Reddit claims there is a second reason for Maleficent’s action, and this one has a connection to Queen Leah.
Was Maleficent friends with Aurora’s parents in “Sleeping Beauty”?
To understand the idea, it is necessary to remember that, before cursing little Aurora, when Maleficent invaded the castle revealing that she had not received the invitation, she was surprised when one of the three good fairies, Merryweather, said that she was not welcome. According to the theory, echoed by the ScreenRant portal, the villain’s reaction is due to a detail not revealed in the animation: Queen Leah would have made a deal with Maleficent so that she could give birth to a child.
It turns out that, at the beginning of the film, it is revealed that the King and Queen had been longing for a child for years, and their wish was finally granted when Aurora was born, but, according to the hypothesis raised on Reddit, this only happened because Leah sought help from Maleficent, who agreed to help the royalty on one condition: to have her attitude publicly recognized, so she could be reintegrated into society, since, until then, she was feared and hated in the kingdom.
The theory goes that Leah would have agreed, but, upon discovering more about Maleficent’s reputation, she backed out of the deal without informing the villain, which is why Maleficent was surprised when her presence was reported as unwelcome, in addition to the incisive look given by the queen to the mistress of evil when she appeared in the castle, as she had already expected this to happen.
Thus, the curse would have been cast not only due to the lack of invitation, but due to the breaking of the agreement, since, by not having Leah’s promise fulfilled, the deal they made was annulled, and in the same way that Maleficent helped give life to Aurora, she could take it away.
