After all, who was the last 2D animated Disney princess?

Find out who was the last Disney princess to be produced using the 2D animation technique

For over 100 years, Disney has won the hearts of millions of fans around the world through its animations, which tell stories of love, friendship, brotherhood, overcoming obstacles and fulfilling dreams.

Nowadays, with the advancement of technology, many of the studio’s animated films are made with 3D technology, that is, they use computer graphics to bring the plot to life. The first princess to adopt this technique was Rapunzel, from “Tangled” (2010), who used computer software with three dimensions and depth of field to create an illusion of movement that resembles reality.

However, bringing the protagonist, who has 20 meters of hair, to life was not easy. According to Rolling Stone magazine, in order to animate this long hair, Disney had to develop an exclusive technology to give movement to the strands, since, until then, no character had been produced with this volume of hair, making “Tangled” the first production by Walt Disney Studios to use CGI.

It is precisely because of this need for a high investment that, according to the New York Film Academy, the film about Rapunzel became the most expensive animated feature film ever produced in history, with a budget of 260 million dollars.

But, before the princesses joined the 3D animation wave, do you know who was the last Disney princess to be produced in 2D format?

The Last Princess in 2D

Since the beginning of the partnership between Disney and Pixar, in the late 90s, the studio founded by Walt Disney began to invest more and more in 3D animations, leaving aside the technique they had used since its foundation.

Their last 2D production released after the beginning of the partnership was “Not Even If the Cow Tugs”, from 2004, directed by Will Finnwhich follows the story of three cows who embark on a great adventure to try to capture the most wanted bandit in town, and use the reward money to try to help save their farm.

2D technology would only return five years later, with the premiere of the last princess film that does not adopt 3D animation: “The Princess and the Frog”. As reported by Folha de S.Paulo, the return of the format was done in great style, and was directed by two filmmakers responsible for working on other great 2D hits: Ron Clements and John Muskerwho were in “The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin”.

As the first black princess in Disney history, in “The Princess and the Frog” we meet Tiana, a hard-working girl who dreams of opening her own restaurant and works every day to save up the money needed to buy the perfect place. However, along the way, she ends up turning into a frog when trying to help a prince who has suffered a curse, causing her to live several adventures before finally becoming part of royalty and getting where she truly wants to be.
