5 unforgettable fairy godmothers from animation

Extremely powerful, fairy godmothers have used their magical abilities for both good and evil in animations; remember 5 of them!

The conflict and the climax (the highest point of tension in a narrative) are two extremely important parts of creating a good story, as they are responsible for captivating the audience and keeping them attentive until the final credits roll, when all the problems will have been resolved.

However, many times when the protagonists are placed in challenging situations, it is common for them to need a little help and, in animations, this assistance can come from magical entities that are willing to protect and fulfill the wishes of their protégés: the fairy godmothers!

Even though they have the function of solving complicated issues with the help of a magic wand, not all fairy godmothers use their powers for good, and some of them are even responsible for causing the conflict and climax of the narratives in which they are inserted.

Thinking about these characters from children’s stories, RECREIO has put together a list of 5 fairy godmothers from animations that are impossible to forget; check it out!

1. Fairy Godmother from ‘Cinderella’

Kind and full of positivity, the fairy godmother of ‘Cinderella’ (1950) was responsible for helping the Disney princess who gives the story its title at the moment that would change the character’s life forever: going to the royal ball that would introduce Prince Charming’s future wife.

This is because Cinderella lived imprisoned in a castle where she was kept as a maid, doing all the housework at the behest of her evil stepmother and her two stepsisters. So, with a little “bibbidi-bobbidi-boo”, the Fairy Godmother helped Cinderella escape from the castle to go to the party, transforming pumpkins into a carriage and the character’s old clothes into a beautiful evening dress on the condition that she return home before midnight, at which time the enchantment would be undone and everything would go back to the way it was before.

What they couldn’t imagine is that Prince Charming would fall in love with Cinderella, starting a search throughout the kingdom until he found her and guaranteed the dream ‘and they lived happily ever after’.

2. Wanda and Cosmo from ‘The Fairly OddParents’

As much as the classic version of a fairy godmother can be represented by an elderly female figure, these magical entities come in all shapes, sizes and genders, as seen in ‘The Fairly OddParents’, an animated series released in 2001 by Nickelodeon, where Wanda and Cosmo are the couple who wield magic wands and are always willing to help Timmy Turner, a 10-year-old boy who deals with parents and a nanny who just want to boss him around.

In the plot, Cosmo has green hair and eyes and a fun and clumsy personality, while Wanda, whose pink dominates her look and her locks, is more focused and is always aware of what could go wrong, since she always tries to contain Timmy’s unreasonable desires – even though he doesn’t listen to her and ends up getting into trouble in every episode.

3. The Blue Fairy from ‘Pinocchio’

The Blue Fairy from ‘Pinocchio’ (1940) had a lot of work during the animation, being responsible for granting two great wishes.

The first can be seen at the beginning of the Disney film when Geppetto creates a wooden puppet and makes a wish to the brightest star in the sky, and without knowing that it was the Blue Fairy, ends up having his wish granted, making Pinocchio come to life.

At the end of the animation, Pinocchio is the one who has his wish granted, since the Blue Fairy, who always accompanied him and saw his good heart up close, transformed him into a real boy.

4. Fairy Godmother from ‘Shrek 2’

The magical powers of a magic wand are not always used for good! This is proven by the Fairy Godmother from ‘Shrek 2’ (2004), who is the real villain of the DreamWorks film.

Manipulative and selfish, the Fairy Godmother made a deal with King Harold and Queen Lillian when Fiona fell victim to a curse. This was because it was her idea to keep the princess locked away in the tower until her true love rescued her, and that love interest should be none other than her son, Prince Charming.

However, when the plan was undone when Shrek saved Fiona, she had to devise a new solution so that Fiona would leave the ogre and marry his son, taking advantage of everything and everyone until the spell turned against the witch, or rather, the spell turned against the Fairy Godmother and she was transformed into soap bubbles.

5. Fauna, Flora and Spring Fairies from ‘Sleeping Beauty’

The three good fairies from ‘Sleeping Beauty’ (1959) are: Fauna, who wears a green dress and is the quietest; Flora, who appears dressed in red and leads the trio; and Primavera, whose clothes are green and stands out for her constant bad mood, a fact that leads her to always argue with Flora.

In the Disney animation, they have been the guardians of Princess Aurora since her birth, being the main ones responsible for protecting her from the evil of Maleficent, the fairy who was not invited to the girl’s christening and cast a curse that would make Aurora fall into a deep sleep after celebrating her 16th birthday.

At the end of the film, Fauna, Flora and Merryweather help Prince Phillip defeat Maleficent by using magic on the sword he wielded to end the villain’s life, and then being able to give true love’s kiss that would awaken Aurora from the spell.
