Present at the hotel
It’s an intimate den (13 rooms) for lovers who find here an aesthetic that defies Camargue codes. Architecture (signature Pierre Vaughan), radical lines (all 1950s modernist codes) and designer pieces (Marcel Breuer, etc.) that stand out from the ubiquitous rosewood walls. No swimming pool, but a library, a good chef and a rooftop that is pictured as a swimming pool… without the water.
Hôtel Present, 5 places Voltaire, 13200 Arles. Phone: 04.90.49.58.98. From €120 per night.

In front of his excellent restaurant in a former butcher’s shop, Dimitri has envisioned a Camargue tapas bar with an excellent wine selection, accompanied by bull empanadas or twisted red rice. It’s trendy and friendly, with a competitive playlist, live gypsy music in a gorgeous above-ground setting inspired by the nearby salt marshes. Open seven days a week.
