Discover the truth about Walt Disney’s supposed secret and private apartment in his first theme park: Disneyland
Disneyland Park was the first Disney park to open. Opened in 1955 in Anaheim, California, the place was entirely planned by Walt Disneyat the same time as producing the animation “Lady and the Tramp”.
To make sure that both the film and the park looked the way he imagined, Waltmade numerous trips from construction in Anaheim, to Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, and his home located on Carolwood Drive in Los Angeles.
“He spent long mornings at the studio, then went back and forth to Anaheim in the afternoon — it was a long trip,” revealed Diane Disney Miller, Walt Disney’s daughter, to The Walt Disney Family Museum blog.
Despite his dedication in the studio, Diane reveals that his father was focused on creating Disneyland, and wanted to spend as much time there as possible. “I think he always imagined he would have to be there… he would like to be there,” says the heiress.
For this reason, the renowned filmmaker made a decision: he would build accommodation in the park, close to Main Street, where he could work and rest, as well as being an option for his family to stay when they wanted to visit the place — and so it was done.
The famous apartment was built above the Town Square Fire Station, and was entirely decorated by the set decorator Emile Kuriwho also worked on other Disneyland attractions such as the Plaza Inn and Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.
As reported by The Walt Disney Family Museum blog, Kuri spared no praise for Waltwhere he stated that “Working with Walt Disney It was like working in another world. He was the most fascinating and dedicated man I knew.”
Containing a Victorian theme, the apartment was decorated with items found by Emileas well as pieces that were part of his own personal collection Disney and your wife, Lilian.

“When Dad traveled, he went to small antique stores, and it was there that he acquired part of his collection of miniatures and trinkets; small porcelain cups and other things. Mom collected cranberry jars, and cranberry is the color that dominates this apartment. It was a little microcosm of the Victorian world in cranberry red — it was beautiful,” says Diane.
The accommodation, in fact, was very well used by the family Disney. On Disneyland’s opening day, July 17, 1955, Walt revealed that he tried to get some rest in the apartment, but was disturbed by his colleagues.
“I decided to get some rest, so I went to bed in the little room above the Fire Station. Everyone kept waking me up, so I got up and locked the door. When I woke up this morning, I couldn’t unlock the damn door. I had to scream for help!” she revealed.
The bedroom nowadays
Currently, the famous bedroom Walt Disney it still exists and can be visited by anyone! To do this, visitors need to book a time on the “Walt’s Main Street Story Tour” through the official Disneyland website, which has very limited spaces and fills up quickly. But it is important to remember that, to be able to do so, you must have a ticket and a reservation for the same day.
However, for those who cannot get a spot to see the apartment from the inside, it is still possible to get a small glimpse of the outside. This is because, when coming across the Fire Department building, visitors can see a window with a lamp lit.
The light in question comes directly from the bedroom. Disneyand it was a way that the park found to show the public that, despite the founder leaving us in 1966, he will always be present.
