Eurovision will take place in May in the Swedish city of Malmo. The semi-finals will be held on May 7 and 9, the grand finals of the competition will take place on Saturday, May 11.
The 68th Eurovision Song Contest changed the order of the Grand Final performances. This is stated on the competition’s official website.
In particular, this year, participants will not only choose where they will perform in the first or second half, but will also have a new option – “Producer’s Choice”.
So, 25 of the 26 artists in the Grand Final (Sweden has already chosen position 1) will get to choose first half, second half or Producer’s Choice in a random draw.
This means that if an artist takes a Producers’ Choice in the random draw, the show’s producers can place that song anywhere in the first or second half of the performance sequence.
In total, there will be six selection slots in the first half and six selection slots in the second half, for a total of 13 “producer’s choice” slots.
The reason for the new rule is to create the most impressive performance sequence possible.
“It’s all about creating the best show on television and giving all the artists a chance to shine. In recent years, with just one draw for the first and second half, you can see that many ballads have gone in one part of the show, or several favorites are chosen to be performed in one half, adding the flexibility of Producer’s Choice gives me the opportunity to create a better flow of different tempos and a more exciting grand finale, ” explains competition producer Christer Björkman.
It was previously reported that artists and bands continue to cancel their performances at Eurovision Village events in Malmö.
