The 1965 composition reached number 1 in the US and is still in first place in the number of recorded cover versions. There are about 2200 of them.
British singer and producer, one of the founders of The Beatles, Paul McCartney Beatle said to whom the legendary song Yesterday is dedicated. He revealed these details in the latest episode of his podcast for songwriters, McCartney: A Life in the Lyrics, reports the New Yourk Post.
Yesterday was considered a breakup ballad, but according to McCartney, it was actually “an expression of guilt towards his mother.”
“It was inspired by the fact that I felt really bad about embarrassing my mom,” McCartney said.
His mother was of Irish descent and worked as a nurse. She died from complications of breast cancer in 1956, when she was 14 years old.
The performer said her mother had a very “posh” accent. One day, when he and the boys were in the backyard, he said something like, “Paul, ask him if he’s going to…”.
“I said, ‘Arsk!’ Arsk! It means ‘ask,’ mom. And she was a little awkward. I remember later thinking, ‘Oh my God, I wish I hadn’t said that.’ And that stuck with me. After she died I thought, “Oh my gosh, I really wish that hadn’t happened… Sometimes you can only appreciate it in hindsight. I really want to take back everything, take back my words. It would be better that way,” shared the musician.
Let’s remember that McCartney has previously admitted what inspired him to write Yesterday.
