This week, British magazine NME revealed its list of the 50 best songs released in 2023, which featured four major K-pop stars. They are: NCT DOJAEJUNG, (G)I-DLE, LE SSERAFIM and NewJeans.
In descending order, the first to appear on the list is the trio NCT DOJAEJUNG, with the song “Perfume”, which occupied 45th position. According to the journalist Rhian Daly“the trio shared a story of pure devotion over R&B grooves with electronic touches.”.
Climbing 10 positions, in 35th, we have (G)I-DLEwith its most recent release “Queencard” which, as pointed out Rhian“should have been on the ‘Barbie’ soundtrack,” and reflects a “celebration of self-empowerment that celebrated other women and delivered an ironic and powerful new statement to repeat in the mirror.”
In 32nd place is LE SSERAFIM, with their b-side “Eve, Psyche & The Bluebeard’s Wife”. In the list, the song is highlighted by the journalist Jenessa Williams as “one of the best pop lyrics of the year”.
Finally, the K-pop song that reached the highest position in the ranking was “Super Shy”, by NewJeans, which took 2nd place. Second Jenessa“picking a favorite NewJeans song of 2023 is the same as picking a favorite superhero. […] Equal parts confident and modest, it’s the perfect encapsulation of her sweet feminine attitude, making two and a half minutes feel like the most dizzying pop trip of your life.”
