Eating too fast has health consequences. Bloating, post-meal fatigue, weight gain… Find out what happens to your body when you consume the contents of your plate too quickly.
Whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner, the observation is often the same. Only habit is bad. Eating too fast has various health consequences. Overview:
Bloating
Regardless of how long it takes to swallow the contents of the plate, “it takes about 30 minutes for the body to understand that it is no longer hungry. It’s all done by hormones in the small intestine, which activate and send a message to the hypothalamus, the part that regulates, among other things, satiety,” explains nutritional physiologist Gilles Mittier. So if you finish your meal in ten minutes, you will still be hungry for the remaining 20 minutes. Appreciation? We continue to eat.

Stomach pains are one of the main consequences of taking this express food. “Digestion begins during the chewing phase,” says nutritionist Laetitia Suissa. In fact, if you don’t take the time to use your teeth, the food isn’t crushed enough when it reaches your stomach. The latter must therefore mobilize a great deal of energy to do so. It is this extra effort that causes digestive discomfort. To avoid them, it is recommended to take breaks during the meal. “For example, by talking or thinking that you are still hungry,” the expert shows.

Fatigue strikes
This is the famous “bar break”. Blame it on the club sandwich, which was devoured in less time than it took to say it. “Digestion always requires a lot of energy from the body, which is why fatigue may occur when leaving the table. Here, because the food comes in chunks rather than crisps in the stomach, it requires more energy from the body to digest it. Fatigue is even more tiring,” explains the dietitian nutritionist.
Mood disorders
According to Gilles Mithieux, the quality of life depends directly on the way we eat, but also on how we take food. “The gut contains 10% of the body’s neurons, which is the main element of digestion. Therefore, it is obvious that this organ is directly connected to the brain. If we eat too quickly, the intestines will understand this and send a message to the brain. The latter will spoil our mood,” says the physiologist. The proof is that we feel a sense of relaxation after eating properly and slowly. “The way we eat defines us. “We should not underestimate this step,” claims the specialist.

Add weight
As seen before, if you eat your food quickly, it will take longer for you to feel full and you will continue to eat. The consequences? A little extra weight will appear on the horizon. “To properly enjoy your food, there should be about twenty minutes between the first and last bite,” says nutritionist Laetitia Suissa.
It is also advisable to start your meal with soup or raw vegetables. “both are poor in energy values, but start the process that leads to a feeling of satiety. It will be more difficult to complete the main course that follows. This is a tip for maintaining a healthy weight,” encourages Gilles Mittier.
Another important point is that it is better not to sit down hungry. Laetitia Suissa concludes: “In this case, it is very difficult not to eat everything in five minutes. Ideally, you should start your meal feeling slightly hungry.”
