Understand why Esme is one of the few Twilight vampires to not have any powers
The Twilight Saga, written by Stephenie Meyer, brought a different version of what the public was used to in relation to vampires and werewolves. One of the main changes between the classic idea of these immortal beings and that presented in the book series, is that vampires have a gift or type of power, which can be super strength, reading the minds of other vampires and even visions of the future.
But not all vampires in this universe have any special abilities. Esme, Carlisle’s vampire companion and who in the film adaptations was played by the actress elizabeth reaserhas no power, being the only one of the Cullen clan without some kind of gift.
The character has no powers in the original story and has remained so in theaters. In novels written by Meyerthere is a moment when Edward comments on Esme’s lack of ability and he goes so far as to state that she has “a strong capacity to love passionately”.
Esme becomes the weakest link in the clan, and even with her willingness to help, she is sometimes left aside for not being able to offer some skill at critical moments. Some fans point out that the vampire would have no gift for her to appear less threatening and more motherly, since she is seen with the Cullens’ mother.
There is no explanation for the fact that Esme does not have any powers, but this absence ends up underscoring the idea that vampires only gain their abilities based on their personal aptitudes and characteristics of human life. In this way, during her mortal life, the character of reaser he had no attribute that could generate a power in his immortal life.
