I share the bitterness of loss with the families of the fallen heroes. During military service, each of them showed the qualities of a real officer: valor, courage and dedication, loyalty to the oath – honorably fulfilling his military duty. Eternal memory to the heroes, – said on June 28 the governor of the region Stanislav Voskresensky.
The governor did not specify how many military personnel were on board and did not name their names.
The downed Il-22 is a modification of the Il-18 turboprop liner, equipped with various communication systems for command and control. Such aircraft are used, among other things, as repeaters for transmitting commands to aircraft and helicopters operating at ultra-low altitudes. An elderly aircraft crew usually consists of five people, as well as two to four telecom operators.
The day before, the telegram channel Fighterbomber, close to the Ministry of Defense, wrote that there were eight people on board the Il-22. Voenkor Irina Kuksenkova reported ten dead crew members.
Earlier, the governor of the Pskov region, Mikhail Vedernikov, said that two pilots of a Ka-52 helicopter were killed during the Wagner PIK mutiny.
Yevgeny Prigozhin himself, at the height of his rebellion, said that his mercenaries “did not kill a single person.” At the same time, after the end of his march, he clarified: not a single soldier died “on the ground.”
How many Russian soldiers died during the Wagner PIK mutiny is unknown. According to the BBC Russian Service, the mercenaries managed to shoot down three Mi-8MTPR electronic warfare helicopters, two Ka-52 and Mi-35 attack helicopters, one Mi-8 military transport, and an Il-22M aircraft.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an address to the nation on June 26, mentioned the pilots of the Ministry of Defense who “died during the rebellion”, saying that “the courage, self-sacrifice of the fallen hero pilots saved Russia from tragic devastating consequences.”
