11 facts about the Brothers Grimm, the creators of fairy tales

You only know the story of Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella and other fairy tales because of the Brothers Grimm

1. Keeping an eye on popular narratives

You Grimm started out as librarians. One day the poet Clemens Brentano invited the two to gather popular tales. They carried out the work, but the poet gave up. The brothers gathered more tales and released, in 1812, the first volume with 86 fairy tales, called “Contos de Fadas para o Lar e as Crianças” (name in Portuguese).

2. Full steam production

As they had a lot of material, they released the second volume with 70 short stories, in 1815. Afterwards, they published another five editions. Throughout life, the Grimm published 200 fairy tales and ten children’s legends.

3. Regional stories

Many believe that the Grimm traveled the world collecting tales, but that didn’t happen. They listened to accountants who lived in Kassel itself and in neighboring cities. Dortchen Wildwife of Wilhelm, would have contributed 12 stories. Snow White, on the other hand, was passed down by two family friends.

4. More than 100 languages

Children’s tales attracted so much attention that the world began to admire the Grimm. His books have been translated into 160 languages. And, throughout their career, the two were always faithful to the reports they heard, that is, they did not invent anything.

5. Childhood tales

Probably, the Grimm knew fairy tales in childhood. It was common for people to come into contact with these stories based on what they heard from nannies, maids, cooks and other people who worked in family homes.

6. Books for Adults

Fairy tales delighted children, but at first they were written for adults or scholars and had no illustrations. The designs only appeared in 1825.

8. Brazil joined the wave

As they never created a story, the brothers Grimm they are not considered writers or poets, but scholars and researchers of popular tales. Other researchers around the world began to do the same. Until here! In 1882, Silvio Romero launched Cantos Populares do Brazil and, in 1885, Contos Populares do Brasil.

9. Working in partnership
