How are Twilight werewolves different from the rest?

Discover how the origin and abilities of the Twilight werewolves differ from the legends

Making part of the list of supernatural creatures in the Twilight saga is Jacob Black, the werewolf who completes the love triangle experienced by him, the human Bella Swan and the vampire Edward Cullen in the narrative created by Stephenie Meyer.

Although it has similar characteristics to the legendary beings that have appeared in fantasy stories for years, the humans capable of transforming into wolves that belong to the teen novel adapted into a film franchise between 2008 and 2012, have several unique attributes. Check out some of them below!

The origin

In the most popular legends and tales, ordinary men become werewolves on full moon nights. Already in the history of Meyerthe situation is a little different, since the origin of these beings, as well as the motivation for transforming themselves, is different.

That’s because, the plot tells that the Quileute clan could detach their spirits from their bodies and travel the Earth. On one such trip, Chief Taha-Aki was unable to return his spirit to his body as a rogue warrior kidnapped the leader’s physical form.

Unable to return, Taha-Aki’s spirit was free until he found a wolf, as the animal allowed him to inhabit his body. According to Screenrant, the head of the Quileute clan can transform into his physical form at the end of the war, from then on, all his descendants gained the power to change shape.

With that, the Twilight werewolves are like shapeshifters, and cannot turn ordinary humans into creatures capable of turning into wolves with just one bite, as in popular stories, here, the change happens exclusively because of genetics.

It is worth remembering that transformations had no connections with the moon, but with what they felt, since anger was the main motivator for changing shape. However, for some, the transformation was not so simple, as for those who did not descend from generations close to the Quileute founding fathers, the process required a lot of practice.

In addition, in the plot they did not lose control over who they were as traditionally happens in other stories when they transform. Here they have conscience and their behavior depends totally on the personality they have as humans.

Even so, it is worth mentioning that a unique point of the saga is that the rivalry between wolves and vampires also impacts on the transformation, since the scent of vampires, which was sweet and burning for wolves, made sleeping werewolves able to transform by first time, as the scent combined with the rage allowed Quileutes to become wolves.

what can kill them

Silver objects, especially silver bullets are the most effective way to take a werewolf’s life, as explained in the oldest legends. However, in the saga, these items pose no special threat to the beings, as they have extraordinarily strong bones.

original points

There are also singular traits in the plot of Meyer, one of which is about the behavior of packs and werewolves. In history they are not solitary beings, quite the contrary, when transformed into their wolf form, werewolves can read the minds of each other in their pack, as well as communicate telepathically, something that facilitates joint action in conflicts, for example.

Finally, the most different point, and perhaps the most questionable, is imprinting. In the saga, werewolves create an imprinting of their soulmates, which means that they generate a deep love connection that will last for a lifetime.
