PMC Wagner is trying to secretly buy weapons for the war in Ukraine through third countries where they have bases, but these purchases have not been completed.
The US State Department confirmed earlier media reports that Wagner PMC was trying to smuggle weapons through Mali to use in the war in Ukraine. This is what State Department Speaker Matthew Miller said, Voice of America reports.
They noted that Wagner was trying to secretly buy weapons for the war in Ukraine through third countries where they had bases.
“There are indications that PMC Wagner is trying to obtain military systems from foreign suppliers and route these weapons through Mali, which is (used) as a third party. So far we have not seen any signs that these purchases have been completed … but we are closely monitoring the situation,” the State Department said.
Miller added that Washington has imposed sanctions against several individuals and organizations supporting Wagner’s military operations, and that the United States will soon be able to share new information on this matter.
It was previously reported that the UN is investigating the massacre of the inhabitants of Mali by the “Wagnerites”.
The civilian death toll in Mali has reportedly quadrupled since the arrival of hundreds of Wagner PKK mercenaries in December 2021.
