Miss Figaro. – What is your state of mind before this opening ceremony?
Kiara Mastroiani: I have infinite stage fright, even though my joy, almost childish, prevails. The ceremony should be solemn in some sense, but I hope to find a form of simplicity, naturalness, because Cannes is first of all a party, a celebration of cinema, its lovers and creators. Cannes unites dreamers.

How does this festival make you dream?
Through the variety of films shown, made by filmmakers from many different generations, cultures and countries. If Cannes is the biggest festival in the world, then it also has the feature of keeping surprises, bringing out unexpected works and talents. Despite the pharaonic logistics, the age of the festival, the international scale, there are always things that escape us. It’s also why I never get angry. This festival also has a power that others do not have. it can change the fates of artists.

Was this the case for you?
It didn’t make much of a difference, but being able to climb the ladder in 1993 for my first film, My favorite season, it was unreal. I felt like I was part of a larger whole, even as I remember the clever mix of horror and fascination it represented. Five years later, I had the opportunity to sit on the jury and watch films for ten days with Martin Scorsese, who was then president; an unforgettable experience.

Another awesome memory, no doubt, your comment award at Un Certain Regard Room 212, in 2019?
I had never won an award before and it was really cool. This reassured me, and above all I was glad that it was for this film; it was all the work of Christophe Honoré and the team that was praised. And such exposure can open doors. Argentinian filmmaker Lisandro Alonso, who was on the jury at the time, has since guided me. eureka, selected this year at the festival, premiering in Cannes.

What exactly does Christophe Honoré represent in your career?
Chance: He always takes me places I never thought I would go. In the theater, for example, with The sky of Nantes. We are also going to resume the show next winter, but until then, we will meet again this summer for a new film.

When you love cinema, Cannes offers something concrete. the festival allows you to take the pulse of international cinema, but also the temperature of the world. Representation of women on screens is a major issue. Are you optimistic about the future?

I have the impression that everything is going in the right direction, but maybe I should tell myself that, because at my age I might give up on everything otherwise. I still have a survival instinct and maybe a bit of naivety too… (Is laughing): But for now, I’m lucky to have great projects. I just shot it Foreign Languages, by Claire Burger which I loved It’s loveand i was playing Mr. SpadeCanal + series by the director Women’s game, with Clive Owen, Louise Bourgoin and Denis Menochet. This is a new adaptation based on the character played by Humphrey Bogart The Maltese Falcon.
