In “Encanto” we are introduced to the Madrigal, a Colombian family that, after receiving a miracle, all children are born with a gift — except for Mirabel, who becomes the only one among the family members who does not have any magical abilities.
However, as the film progresses, this miracle begins to weaken, causing the family to slowly begin to lose their powers, and everything starts to go wrong. The first to feel the change was Luísa, sister of Mirabelwho has the gift of super strength.
At one point, while talking to the girl, Luisa revealed that, during the reveal party for her cousin Antonio’s gift, she felt “weak”, something that had never happened. At the same time, Mirabel begins to notice some cracks forming in the house they live in, in addition to the door of her sister’s room starting to blink.
After these events, the girl known for being able to carry everything, starts to have difficulties in lifting heavy objects that, before, seemed like a feather to her. But why was she the first in her family to start losing her gift?
fan theory
Through the social network Reddit, animation fans shared a curious theory that may explain why Luisa was the first to feel her powers getting weaker.
According to her, the answer to that question lies in the main plot of the film, where the Madrigals need to learn to value each other for what they are, and not just for their powers. In the plot, Luisa is the member of the family in which everyone around her has the most expectations and, precisely because of this, she begins to doubt her value within the house.
Furthermore, the pressure of being an extremely strong woman comes not only from her family, but from the entire city as well. Although all the members help their neighbors with their gifts, Luisa is the one who performs the most manual favors, being requested by residents everywhere she goes — where, many times, they don’t even ask how she is doing.
All these high expectations for the girl began to make her feel that the only thing that made her valuable to the Madrigals was her super strength. In her solo song “Estao Nervosa”, she even goes so far as to say the phrase “I am nothing if you take away my gift”. Remember!
Thus, with Luisa’s enormous need to always be working to help everyone, in order to prove that she is valuable, it may have made her believe that her gifts were a burden, not a gift. The more she doubts herself, the more she becomes susceptible to the weakening of the family’s magic.
