‘The Last of Us’ contains several hidden behind-the-scenes details that help tell more about the post-apocalyptic plot
Recently adapted for a series on HBO‘The Last of Us’ emerged as a game developed by Naughty Dog, where those who had Playstation in 2013 could follow the saga created by Bruce Straley It is Neil Druckmann which featured Joel and Ellie leaving the military quarantine zone 20 years after an epidemic that nearly devastated life on earth.
The game that, according to TechTudo, won more than 200 Game of the Year awards, has several backstage stories that help to understand the paths that led the game to be one of the most popular of the last decade. With that in mind, we’ve listed below 5 curiosities about ‘The Last of Us’ that you need to know!
1. Spoiler that shouldn’t be given
Developed in secret, the announcement of ‘The Last of Us’ was supposed to be made before the release of ‘Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception’, but Sony ended up postponing the event.
The problem is that, in order to pique the curiosity of fans, Naughty Dog had placed an easter egg of the post-apocalyptic plot in the adventure game. The allusion should have been withdrawn after the release was postponed – but that is not what happened.
Inadvertently, the reference continued into the game and can be seen on the bar counter where Nathan is attacked at the beginning of Uncharted 3, where there is a newspaper that has a headline that says: “scientists are still struggling to understand deadly fungus”.
2. Real Inspiration
The game explains that a mutation of the Cordyceps spread through plantations in the United States and infected humans who consumed the contaminated vegetables, fruits and greens. , the fungus spreads out of people’s heads, making them blind.
Although it seems like just a fictional story, Cordyceps exists in real life. The ‘zombie fungus’ called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis was discovered by Neil Druckmann, one of the game’s creators, while he was watching the 2008 documentary ‘Planet Earth’.
In the documentary Druckmann saw the fungus parasitizing the body of an ant. The insect continues to live and Cordyceps develops and spreads within the insect’s body until it completely dominates the host’s nervous system.
3. From villain to young lady
Originally, Tess would not be one of those responsible for helping to take Ellie out of the quarantine zone, but rather, a villain.
What’s interesting is that, originally in the story, Tess took more of a villain role,” said Neil Druckmann in an interview with Game Informer in 2013 (via IGN). “Tess was betrayed by Joel and took it upon herself to chase him across the country. That story never panned out. The story changed and Tess took on this role where she became more of a believer and helped motivate Joel.”
According to information disclosed in Druckmann’s lecture at the IGDA 2013 in Toronto, Tess would pursue Joel and Ellie after her brother was killed in crossfire with the military, which she blamed Joel for what happened.
4. Last names were a mystery
In the first game of ‘The Last of Us’, no character, whether secondary or main, had his last name revealed during the events of the plot, with the exception of Riley Abel (who appears in the Left Behind expansion).
In fact, those who bought the Japanese version of the game could read in the manual that Joel’s last name is listed as “Miller”, while Ellie’s is “Williams”. However, the information was not considered canon by the official Last Of Us wiki, which meant that the surnames were only actually confirmed with the release of ‘The Last of Us Part II’, as found by O Vice.
5. Perfectly Tuned
The game’s soundtrack was created by Gustavo Santaolallaan Argentine musician and composer who created the songs simultaneously with the production, using unique resources for creations, since, as O Vício points out, he recorded inside bathrooms and kitchens, as well as playing a guitar out of tune.
