How did Avatar help create the lightest 3D camera?

A classic on the big screen, ‘Avatar’ has also become a revolutionary in the film industry.

In addition to becoming a classic, ‘Avatar’, a film released in 2009 under the director’s commands James Cameronbecame a major change agent within the film industry due to its innovative use of computer graphics and for using an old technique that was no longer so successful in movie theaters: 3D.

The three-dimensional effect of images has been used in movies since the 50s, where the classic Hitchcock titled ‘Dial M Para Matar’ (1954) was released using height, depth and width mixed with light and shadow, to cause the effect that leaps from the screens. However, the use of this feature was limited, being seen only in specific scenes of feature films.

How did Avatar help create the lightest 3D camera?

The first in 3D were recorded by two cameras, equipped with blue and red lenses (the same color as the glasses used by the public so that the effect could be seen on the big screens). The colors were used as filters, since the red ones blocked the passage of the blue color through its absorption, recording images with a total absence of that color, while the blue ones did the same for the red color.

To create the three-dimensional effect, the cameras had to be mechanically placed together and locked to capture the image, and as reported by G1, in the 90s when Cameron directed his first 3D film, a version of “Terminator 2” for the Universal Studios theme park, it required the creation of makeshift construction equipment to lift material from the ground in scenes shot from top to bottom.

In addition, producing 3D images is an expensive process, as well as the risk of them performing strangely on the big screen or even not being able to be recorded. For this reason, even with the idea of Avatar ready since 1994, the available technology would not be able to portray Pandora, the Na’vi and all the creatures of the alien planet with all the richness of details that Cameron wished.

Despite the project being shelved, this did not prevent James from giving up the idea, persisting for 14 years and remaining committed to the creation of highly technological cameras, until then, contributing to the emergence of the most advanced stereoscopic camera in the world so far, capable of to digitally capture the movement of actors and in 3D.

With final editions of peter jackson (The Lord of the Rings) and Weta Digital,’Avatar’ (2009) became the first film shot entirely in 3D. The innovation allowed the feature to be used again in theaters, being popular to this day in major productions such as Marvel Cinematographic Universe films.

more innovation

Also in 3D, ‘Avatar: O Caminho da Água’, presents even more innovation, since it uses a more sophisticated laser projection system known as pure laser, which allows for a more fluid display of scenes, without blurred images.

This is possible, as the equipment uses 60,000 lumens to project images at 48 frames per second (High Frame Rate – HFR), instead of the traditional 24 frames per second.

In addition, several Sony Venice cameras were used to create a stereoscopic 3D system, as well as a process that captures footage from above and below and then integrates them into a single image.
