5 Details You Missed About ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’

Discover answers to questions and hidden messages in the new film of the Avatar franchise

On display for just over three weeks, ‘Avatar: The Road to Water’ follows Jake Sully and his family thirteen years after the events shown in ‘Avatar’ (2009), the first film in the franchise of James Cameron. Remember the trailer!

If you’ve already secured your ticket and followed the twists and turns of the new plot, it’s possible that you’ve had some doubts about certain events, or that you’ve let some of the facts slip through the majestic scenes. So we’ve rounded up 5 details below that you might not have noticed in the Sully’s new story.

1. Bioluminescence is what moves the place

In one of the first scenes of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, Jake and Neytiri ride their banshees. This is the moment when the flying creatures appear in a night scene for the first time, showing that they share Pandora’s typical bioluminescence, raising the theory that all beings on the alien planet share this characteristic and that the real threats to life in the ‘vi are the ones that don’t have that aspect.

2. Humans are here to stay

Proving that humans won’t give up on Pandora anytime soon, it’s shown in the new movie that there’s an entire city made up of Earthlings on the alien planet. The place that is called “Bridgehead City” clearly alludes to the military strategy used to advance or attack enemy territory through bridges.

Furthermore, the Sky People believe that Pandora is already taken and that the Omaticaya are a rebellion against the power already established by humans.

3. The significance by which Spider saves Colonel Miles Quaritch

Despite having caused reactions of amazement among the audience that followed the plot in theaters, the scene in which Spider saves Colonel Miles Quaritch at the end of the film says a lot about his ambivalent feelings, since he is a human who lives among the na’vi who sometimes doesn’t feel part of the local culture and who doesn’t agree with some attitudes of the inhabitants of Pandora.

Also, wanting a father figure and witnessing certain moments where the Colonel shows empathy for others and himself, saving him shows that Spider was the only one who noticed the signs of humanity in Quaritch.

4. Racial prejudice among the Na’vi

In all, there are 15 different Na’vi clans, and in addition to the Omaticaya, the tribe of Neytiri, the second film in the franchise presents the Metkayna, the people of the water. This civilization features greenish skin, light eyes, strong arms with fins, and oar-like tails.

The difference between them and the Omaticaya provokes surprise and ridicule when Jake Sully and his family look for them asking for shelter, since sometimes their thinner arms, difficulty breathing underwater and long tail are mentioned as defects, in addition to the that, the fact that Lo’ak and Kiri have five fingers like Avatars and humans are pointed out as dishonor within the community.

5. The Tulkun Hunt Proves Spider Adhered to Na’vi Traditions

After humans manage to capture a Tulkun and begin the process of withdrawing a golden fluid from its brain called ‘Amrita’, which prevents the aging of the earth’s population, it is revealed that the animal’s body is discarded. Upon learning this, Spider is confused as he does not understand the reason why the large creature was wasted.

That’s because, in the Na’vi tradition, all life is sacred. So when animals die, they use the meat for food, the skin for clothing, and the bones for weapons and tools.
