The magazine of the National Consumer Institute just released its list of the cleanest cosmetics, with 76 products featured. And obviously, men can worry about the formulation of their deodorants.
If the trend is toward clean beauty to satisfy consumers who are increasingly concerned about what they put on their skin, not all products are in the game. 60 million consumers presents a new list dedicated to the cleanest cosmetics in the January issue. Shower gels, shampoos and deodorants are examined according to the Cosmeto’Score system, classified from A (no reservation for use) to E (use is not recommended – then the magazine states that they are “not a danger, but a danger”, especially on a daily basis use that applies to this type of care).

As the publication explains, it is not the effectiveness that is measured here, on the other hand, we take into account the safety profile of all the ingredients, taking into account “their effect on health (70% of the label), but also: […] on the environment”.

The most problematic category
What are the challenges in these different rankings? Very poor scores for domains dedicated to the male community. For moisturisers, only one (Nivea Men’s Protect & Care Moisturizing Cream) received a Cosmeto’Score A, while half received an E.
But the most problematic category remains deodorants. Seven products were tested (including Mennen, Ax or Brut). Health scores range between D and E for 6 of them. And this, regardless of the format (compressed aerosol, ball or stick). The reasons for these poor scores. Sensitizing fragrances, ‘preservatives sometimes suspected of being endocrine disruptors (benzyl salicylate, salicylic acid and benzophenone). And molecules aimed at limiting the spread of bacteria responsible for bad odors. An alarming finding that lands them dead last in the magazine’s ranking, which nevertheless tested 22 products.

Aluminum salts
The only standout is the Etiaxil antiperspirant, which has a health score and Cosmeto’Score B. But since it’s an antiperspirant, it contains aluminum salts, which are highly criticized as suspected carcinogens and endocrine disruptors. . It is therefore recommended not to use them on damaged or freshly shaved or depilated skin.
