For the 2022 Christmas campaign, micro-entrepreneurs from Gamarra they expected to return at least 40% of what was billed before the pandemic; However protests in Peru jeopardize these gains.

“If we have blocked roadscustomers can’t come and we can’t ship product. In addition, local shoppers don’t want to go to the mall for fear of stumbling into the street or don’t want to endure traffic jams,” explained Susana Saldanha, president of the business association Gamarra Peru.

In 2019, Gamarra shopping center had an annual turnover of SGD 6,500,000, this year they expected to receive at least 40% of the amount in Christmas Campaign.

“This year we expected to exceed 40% of sales in relation to pre-pandemic sales, this could not be because the wholesale campaign was lost. In 2021, we were unable to recover, as in the two campaigns of 2022,” he said.

Susana Saldanha also explained that this year, due to various factors caused by the late start of the wholesale campaign, which started two weeks later and continued into the first days of December, these wholesale sales were suspended due to protests.

This Christmas campaign provided an opportunity for the 20,000 microentrepreneurs who are still surviving the pandemic to recover. Now they are not sure, because if the blockade is not lifted, their provincial customers will not be able to come, and they are the ones who make 60% of registered purchases.

in fear of robbery

Susana Saldanha said that on the day of the coup Pedro Castillo there were many riots in the mall, also due to fear of looting, for this reason, “many micro-entrepreneurs closed their premises and increased security. We also called the police, and now 200 soldiers are guarding everything,” he said.
