A total of 268 people have been arrested in Latin America and the Caribbean for smuggling people or immigrants as part of a major pan-American operation coordinated by Interpol.
The fourth edition of the operation “Turquoise”occurred between 28 November and 2 December and connected police forces from across the continent with an international organization based in Lyon (France).
In total, 9015 people were found during the operation. immigrants and released 126 trafficked women and two men, according to preliminary figures released this Wednesday by Interpol in a statement.
Most of the victims were from Venezuelan citizenship D Colombian.
“Smuggling of people and migrants is a business. criminals billionaires who finance organized crime groups and violate the basic rights of the victims,” said Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock.
He added that officers had heard “heartbreaking” stories of exploitation international migrants.
During the operation, the agents exercised increased control in areas previously identified as “key points”, especially at border crossings, bus stations and airports.
Many cases concerned the interception in Central America of migrants “from all over the world”, as well as the discovery in Mexico of 2,400 people from the American continent (Cuba and Venezuela), Africa (Angola, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Ethiopia) and Asia (Bangladesh and Nepal).
In Nicaragua, police found more than 2,000 African, Asian and American migrants (mainly Haiti and Ecuador) on their way to USA and Canada.
AT Chileborder control with Bolivian D Peru discovered about 300 migrants Venezuelans and Bolivians, including several minors.
Among other examples, Brazilian authorities arrested four people suspected of trying to smuggle 21 migrants from Cuba and South Africa into French Guiana and Brazil.
And in Honduras, a 30-year-old woman was arrested as an organizer sexual exploitation of three minors.
