Sale this week nougat “soared” on demand for the purple month and is expected to outperform previous years’ sales, reports National Association of Bakery and Confectionery Entrepreneurs (Aspan).
“We believe we will exceed 2019 production and exceed 4 million kilos of nougat,” said Pio Pantoja, President Aspan. His statements were made based on reports from various confectionery businesses.
According to the spokesman, people have a desire to “catch up on lost time”, referring to the period during which the quarantine lasted, and low offer what happened when the processions for the Lord of Wonders were cancelled.
A box of nougat retails for £22 but can be bought in bulk for up to £15. Today on the 49th block of Peru Avenue Long queues were recorded to purchase Joel’s nougat at a popular bakery. Many got up early to buy a product, and selling this sweet is another reason to get income at this time.
I’ve been here since half past five in the morning. It was terrible (expectation), because of the cold most of all,” commented a young man in line.
Demand for panettone will rise in December
But not only October is the month of miracles, but also December, as bakers expect to raise sale of its artisan panetones, the most sought-after preservative-free products. As evidence, Pantoia explained that yeast imports had increased and this was due to future consumption of these products.
“By 2022, sales of panettone will increase, especially those made in bakeries, because they do not use additives and preservatives … Last year we sold 33 million kilograms of panettone, and this year we will probably reach 40 million,” said he.
