Russia in Mariupol is stealing steel paid for by Europeans, and will be punished for it, Metinvest is sure.
Losses from Russian theft of metal products from Ukrainian factories and ports are estimated at $600 million. Yuri Ryzhenkov, CEO of Metinvest, said this in an interview with the BBC.
According to him, part of the stolen steel, which is transported to Rostov in Russia and then sold in Asia and Africa, is intended for customers who have already paid for it in advance. Thus, the theft of Russia hit not only Ukraine, but also partners abroad.
“What they are doing is theft. They are stealing not only our products, but also those that have already been paid for and belong to European consumers. That means they are also stealing from Europeans,” Ryzhenkov insisted.
He added that Metinvest is now documenting all known robbery facts for a lawsuit.
“One day the Russians will face not only international courts, but also criminal courts. And we will prosecute them with everything we have,” said the head of the company.
Earlier, it was repeatedly reported that Russia was stealing Ukrainian metal and grain at the state level: the invaders continued the work of the port of Mariupol in order to export more loot. Currently, at least three ships are known to have brought stolen metal products to Rostov. However, there may be more flights: according to experts, Russian ships have started turning off their tracking systems to avoid being tracked.
In addition, Russia seized foreign ships that were in port in February and were preparing to load metal products.
The Azovstal and Ilyich Iron and Steel Works, located in Mariupol, have already applied to the Prosecutor General’s Office with a request to open criminal proceedings on the theft of their Russian products.
In turn, Metinvest co-owner Rinat Akhmetov said that SCM will demand compensation from Russia for “the cynical loading of Ukrainian steel on its ships in Mariupol,” which is theft and a violation of international that law.
