Since mid-December 2024, the price of garlic has confidently crossed the mark of 200 hryvnias per kilogram.
The price of garlic in Ukraine has set an absolute record, which is more than 200 Hryvnia per kilogram. This was reported by EastFruit.
Since mid-December, prices for garlic in supermarkets confidently remained above 200 UAH/kg, which became the absolute maximum.
According to experts, there is no continuous cultivation in Ukraine – mostly small batches from gardens are sold, they are of different quality and varieties, and therefore not suitable for retail chains or for industrial processing. In Ukraine it is difficult to find even a few commercial lots, and importing high-quality garlic is too expensive.
The main reasons for the increase in the price of garlic:
-
growing demand for it in Europe – in German and Austrian supermarkets the average price of garlic is around 6 euros, although sometimes it costs almost 20 euros/kg;
-
supply lags behind demand – in 2024, the main producer of garlic in the EU, Spain, will completely exhaust reserves for the first time in three years. Even supplies from alternative suppliers in South America have dried up.
The European Union also has quotas for the import of garlic from China, but they have been exhausted, and now it is imported with fines of 1,200 euros per ton. Despite this, people continue to buy garlic.
According to the State Statistics Service, since 2020, the area of garlic cultivation in Ukraine has decreased by 15% – to 21 thousand hectares. Cultivation is carried out by small and family farms, and experts do not rule out that the official figures have been exceeded.
It was previously reported that inflation in Ukraine has exceeded the psychological threshold.
