The Italian prime minister is likely to discuss with Trump the easing of his differences with European countries.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni arrived at the residence of US President-elect Donald Trump in Mar-a-Lago (Florida) on Saturday, January 4, for an informal meeting. This was reported by the American newspaper The New York Times, citing three sources.
The publication wrote that the meeting reinforces hopes among Meloni’s fans that the Italian prime minister will become “Trump’s main ally in Europe.” The agenda for the meeting has not been announced, but Meloni is likely to discuss with Trump the easing of Republican differences in European countries.
Another possible topic, according to observers, is the detention of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala in Iran. It comes days after Italy arrested, at the request of the United States, an Iranian suspected of supplying components for drones to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
Meloni’s meeting with Trump will take place a few days before the current head of the American administration Joe Biden’s trip to Italy, scheduled for January 9-12. In Rome, Biden is scheduled to meet with Meloni and Pope Francis.
Since his election, the newspaper notes, several heads of state have visited Trump’s residence, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Argentine President Javier Miley and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Earlier in the day, Meloni said he considers Musk a genius, but admitted that there are things where their views differ.
