German Galushchenko considered the implementation of Bratislava’s threats unlikely, but explained how Kyiv would act if it happened.
Slovakia is unlikely to stop exporting electricity to Ukraine due to the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukrainian territory. Energy Minister German Galushchenko said this in an interview with Politico.
“I don’t think they will agree to it,” Galushchenko said, commenting on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s threats to stop exporting electricity to Ukraine.
According to him, such a step is completely contrary to the rules of the European Union. Therefore, the Ukrainian authorities have appealed to the European Commission with a request to start official consultations on this issue.
He also added that Ukraine can replace Slovak electricity by increasing imports from Romania and Poland. In particular, Warsaw has already offered its help to Kyiv.
“If the goal is to make Ukraine suffer, it will not work in this situation,” the energy minister emphasized.
The head of the department said that if Slovakia stops exporting electricity, it will lead to the loss of “hundreds of millions of dollars a year,” because Ukraine pays for this electricity.
Galushchenko also noted that Bratislava will lose access to potentially cheap electricity supplies from Ukraine in the future.
As you know, Fico threatens to stop the export of electricity to Ukraine because it refuses to transit Russian gas from January 1, 2025. He made the corresponding statement after a trip to Moscow and a meeting with Putin.
Let’s remember that the Ministry of Economy of Slovakia said that stopping the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine is not a rational decision and will lead to an increase in prices on the European energy markets, which will negatively affect the economy of Slovakia. However, the agency admitted that gas will continue to flow to Europe via other routes.
